Johan Sebastian Bach
Základem Bachova přístupu k hudbě byla snaha o řemeslnou dokonalost. To předpokládalo důkladnou znalost hudebních nástrojů, a to i z hlediska jejich stavby. Bach byl znalcem varhan i jiných klávesových nástrojů a přispěl k jejich zdokonalení; podle návrhu byla postavena viola pomposa (= violoncello piccolo). Komponoval vždy na objednávku nebo pro městské slavnosti, k poctě šlechtických jubilantů, pro domácí muzicírování a pedagogické účely. Hudebně nečinil rozdíly mezi chrámovou a světskou hudbou, řadě svých světských děl podložil dodatečně náboženský text (Vánoční oratorium aj.). Najednou uplatnil tutéž hudbu v různém nástrojovém. Dochovala se jen asi polovina jeho díla: 200 chrámových a několik desítek světských kantát (Kávová, Selská a Lovecká), 6. motet, Slavnostní mše (Hohe Messe), 4 krátké mše s částmi Kyrie a Gloria, jež mohly být prováděny i v luterské církvi, Janovy (1724) a Matoušovy (1729) pašije, Magnificat, 4 vícehlasé orchestrální ouvertury-suity; 6 sonát pro housle a cembalo, dále množství varhanních preludií, tokát a fug, soubor chorálových předeher pro varhany; pro cembalo Temperovaný klavír, tj. dvoudílný soubor tónin seřazených dvojic preludií a fug (celkem 96 vět), Anglické a Francouzské suity, Italský koncert, Goldbergovy variace, Dvouhlasé invence aj. Své dílo uzavřel Bach soubory modelových řešení nejsložitějších kontrapunktických forem, pro než většinou neurčil nástrojové obsazení: Hudební obětina (na téma Fridricha II) a Umění fugy (nedokončeno).
Mnoho podnětů a formových vzorů převzal Bach z italské hudby, zvláště v kantátách a v koncertech, pro něž mu byl vzorem zvláště Vivaldi. Německé tradice se projevily v souhrnu varhanní hudby a mnohostranném uplatnění protestanského chorálu. Rozvinul v Německu oblíbenou formu suity tanečních věd: jejich polonézy dosvědčují polské inspirační zdroje. V stylizaci cembalových skladeb a v pomalých větách suit sou patrné vlivy francouzké. Nad všemi přijatými podněty však stojí sjednocující velké, zcela ojedinělé Bachovo umění.
Po smrti byl Bach umělecky zapomenutý, na konci 18. stol. znalo jen několik odborníků Temperovaný klavír. Teprve v roce 1825 Mendelssohn provedl silně upravené Matoušovy pašije a 1850 - 1900 vydala německá bachovská společnost celé jeho dílo. Dnes je Johann Sebastian Bach jedním s nejslavnějších a nejuznávanějších hudebních skladatelů.
